Logistics: Poland with a Toddler

How to Get Around Poland with Toddlers

Malbork Central Train Station

For the majority of family travelers, taking the PKP trains and public transportation is the best way to to get around Poland.

The long-distance EIP (Express Intercity Premium) train network is very extensive and will get you to most destinations within the country.

You won’t have the stress parking, you’ve got room to move around the carriage, plus there are dedicated family carriages.

Each city in our Poland itinerary with toddlers also has fantastic public transportation to get you around town!

If you want to learn more about Polish trains, check out our PKP Family Ticket Guide!

However, if you plan to visit very rural areas in Poland, then a rental car may be in your best interest.

Where to Stay in Poland with Toddlers

Aparthotels are by far the best accommodation option with toddlers! These apartment-style hotels offer en suite kitchenettes and separate sleeping areas that are perfect for nap time. Plus, many come with easy laundry facilities!

Centrally located hotels near the city center are also essential for making the most of your time in each city. You’ll be traveling slower with a toddler anyways, so cutting out a long commute is ideal for sightseeing.

Essential Toddler Gear for Poland

A stroller is necessary for carrying your essentials, tired legs, or even a tired tot needing a nap on the go. You will want a sturdy travel stroller that can handle cobblestones. Having the right wheels is very important!

Double-check that your accommodations offer cribs so you don’t have to pack your own.

However, if your toddler sleeps on a floor bed, I highly recommend bringing an inflatable mattress. This gives you peace of mind that they won’t fall off a bed or cot in the middle of the night.

PS, the inflatable mattress I recommend comes with a pump sack so you don’t have to worry about an electric pump abroad. This saves space and weight in your luggage, too!

Additionally, bring enough diapers and wipes for the first couple of days. Then you can get more at Rossmann or Hebe drugstores, which are on almost every corner.

Otherwise, aim to just pack the essentials. Start with a toddler packing list to make sure you don’t overpack!

Your 10-Day Poland Itinerary with Toddlers

After lunch, take a Sightseeing Cruise on the Vistula River to see the city from an exciting viewpoint!

Day 2

Walk up Wawel Hill to explore the Royal Castle grounds. You can’t miss the Wawel Dragon statue, which breathes real fire!

Spend the afternoon strolling along the Vistula River. There are several playgrounds along the way so you can avoid the afternoon crowds in the city center.

This evening, head to the Garden of Lights for an amazing display! The theme changes fairly often, so check their website to see what’s on for your trip!

Day 3

Spend some time at the Museum of Municipal Engineering for hands-on exploration of vintage trams.

Spend some time in the Planty Park gardens surrounding the Old Town. There’s plenty of green space and playgrounds to burn off some post-nap energy!

Warsaw (Days 4–6)

Day 4

Take the train to Warsaw in the morning, and get settled into your hotel.

Take a leisurely stroll around the reconstructed Old Town. The mermaid statue is a must-see!

For another view of the city, try a Traditional Galar Cruise on The Vistula River. Yes, my toddler loves boats. 🙂

Additionally, make sure you check out the Multimedia Fountain Park in the Old Town! Kids will love the water features all without getting too wet. Return again in the evening for a light show!

Day 5

Spend some time at the Copernicus Science Centre. The Buzzz! exhibition is specifically targeted at kids 5 and under! You can bring your stroller through the center and leave it near this exhibition. If you so desire, you can catch a kid-friendly show at the Planetarium as well.

After lunch, burn off energy in the beautiful Łazienki Park, aka the “Royal Baths.” Look for the famous red squirrels and peacocks that roam the palace grounds! If it’s Sunday, you can catch a free Chopin concert, too!

Warsaw is full of playgrounds, so keep your eyes peeled for quick stops to burn off energy!

Day 6

Cross the river to see the impressive Warsaw Zoo. With over 500 animal species, your family is sure to spend hours here!

If you still have about an hour (and energy…), toddlers will love the Museum World of Illusion. Located right in the heart of Old Town, you’ll easily be able to swing in!

Gdańsk & Malbork (Days 7–10)

Day 7

Take the train to Gdańsk before getting settled into your hotel.

As an important Baltic pier city, you can of course take sightseeing Gdańsk cruise.

Otherwise (if you’re over boats), try a city tour in a golf cart or even a vintage car!

Spend your final morning strolling around Gdańsk Old Town.

If you’re flying out of Krakow or Warsaw, take the train to return to your departure airport.

Alternative Option: Wrocław

If you have more time, or prefer to skip Gdańsk, Wrocław with toddlers is a fantastic option!

Toddlers will LOVE finding all the gnomes around town. My personal favorite is the gnome using an ATM outside of a bank.

Other than that, there is plenty to do to keep a toddler entertained all within the city!

Day 1

Spend some time strolling around Rynek (the Market Square). Make sure to grab a “Dwarf Map” from the tourist office! Then, hunt for all the Krasnale (dwarfs) hidden near the Town Hall.

Take a tram ride to Kolejkowo, Poland’s largest miniature world. The tiny moving trains will excite your toddler for hours!

For a fun, short ride, take the nearby Polinka cable car across the river. It only takes about 3 minutes and you can buy tickets at any ticket machine in town.

At dusk, head to Oströw Tumski (Cathedral Island) to watch a traditional lamplighter light over 100 gas lanterns!

Day 2

The Afrykarium at the Wrocław Zoo is a world-class oceanarium. It’s even got an underwater tunnel with sharks and manatees!

As you can probably imagine, Wrocław also has an Odra River Cruise you can take to see the city.

The Japanese Garden in the city is also a great place with green space for toddlers to roam.

In the evening, check out the Multimedia Fountain show! This is the largest one in Poland, so is absolutely worth staying up for.

Day 3

Spend some time in Hydropolis, a unique water-themed science center. Check out the interactive kids zone, or even just marvel at all the lights and water!

To keep with the water theme, spend some time at Aquapark Wrocław! With both indoor and outdoor pools and splash pads, you can burn off energy here in rain or shine.
