Twinkling lights, hot chocolate, and general merriment? Christmas markets are hard to beat. The best family-friendly ones across the US, Canada, and Mexico bring that old-school European feel without the long plane ride to Germany.
As a travel advisor (and a mom), I’ve rounded up my favorites below.
How Do You Avoid the Crowds at Christmas Markets?
Go on a weekday, right when the market opens. Early afternoon works well, too.
Evenings and weekends get packed fast, so save those for when you’re truly flexible (or when you just can’t help it!).

What are some essential items to bring to a Christmas market with kids?
Preparation ensures everyone stays warm, happy, and healthy. Pack lots of layers!
Everyone should dress warm, and you’ll want a set of backup clothes for your little travelers in case of spills or accidents.
Because there will be spills. Probably hot chocolate.
I also always pack wipes, sanitizer, and small snacks, plus cash for tokens for rides.

What are the best activities for children at Christmas markets?
Look for carousels, visits with Santa, puppet shows, and craft stations. Many markets have areas designed especially for younger visitors!
Chicago’s market, for example, has a Kinder Club with passports, riddles, and a Lantern Parade.
💡 Pro tip: Plan 1-2 kid activities per day. Your kiddos stay excited, and you won’t end up dragging tired little travelers from booth to booth.
Top Family-Friendly Christmas Markets in the USA
Many US markets are styled after traditional German Christkindlmarkts, and they’re a wonderful fit for families.
Christkindlmarket Chicago, Illinois

This market offers a classic market vibe that keeps the whole family busy.
This Christmas Market is the gold standard in North America. It’s modeled after the famous Nuremberg market, with festive music, German food, traditional crafts, and that Kinder Club I mentioned earlier.
Great Dickens Christmas Fair, Daly City, California
If your kids love dressing up and history, or you’d rather skip the cold, this fair is for you.
Picture Victorian London with hundreds of costumed performers. The fair is all indoors, with music halls, dance floors, and treats like roasted chestnuts.
Union Square Holiday Market, New York City, New York

For Christmas gift shopping, you can’t beat this Christmas Market in NYC.
You’ll find more than 150 vendors in downtown Manhattan, set up in cozy alpine-style chalets. Hot chocolate is everywhere, and so are unique gifts.
Denver Christkindlmarket, Colorado

The Chriskindlmarket provides big Christmas atmosphere on a small budget.
The Mile High City brings German traditions to the mountains, plus it’s free to attend. Expect European craft vendors, traditional German food, and performances by Bavarian musicians.
Even better? You get to walk beneath the Mile High Tree.
Christmas Markets in Canada
Canada mixes European-inspired markets with a few that feel distinctly Canadian. Add historic city backdrops, and you’ve got a fantastic setting for family photos.
The Distillery Winter Village, Toronto, Ontario

Best for families wanting to meet Santa, with live entertainment and a photo-worthy tree all in one stop.
Formerly known as the Toronto Christmas Market, it’s set in the historic Distillery District, with cobblestone streets, Santa’s Village, and an iconic Christmas tree.
Check their website before you go for the full lineup of family activities.
Vancouver Christmas Market, British Columbia

This market is great for kids who would happily spend an hour with Santa (and his stories).
Vancouver’s Jack Poole Plaza turns into a whimsical holiday village here. Stroll winding alleys of artisan huts, snack on authentic European treats, and check out the new Santa’s Workshop with story time and photos.
Quebec City German Christmas Market, Quebec

For an old-world feel in the Western Hemisphere, this market really delivers.
This market sits against the gorgeous historic architecture of Old Quebec City. Think European-style wooden kiosks, gingerbread, and savory sausages.
Festive Holiday Markets in Mexico
For a warmer holiday experience, Mexico is a colorful, family-focused option, with Christmas traditions centered around Las Posadas. Zero snow boots required.
Zócalo Christmas Market, Mexico City

If you’re looking for a warm winter getaway, but still want the ice skating rink, head to CDMX!
The Zócalo, Mexico City’s main square, becomes the heart of Christmas in the city. You’ll find a towering Christmas tree, traditional handicrafts, live music, and yes, even a large ice skating rink.
San Miguel de Allende Holiday Market, Guanajuato

Looking for a little Mexican culture? This popular expat city delivers.
This UNESCO World Heritage city has an artistic feel, and the market matches it. You’ll find handmade jewelry and contemporary art, and your family can join local celebrations like Las Posadas.
Guadalajara Christmas Market, Jalisco

The birthplace of mariachi music, it’s easy to find entertainment the whole family will enjoy in Guadalajara.
Set around the historic Plaza de la Liberación, this market showcases traditional Mexican crafts like pottery and handwoven goods. Look for local specialty candies, too, plus colorful folk dance performances.
