What is the best age for a Harry Potter UK tour?

While the Warner Bros. Studio Tour is suitable for all ages, the entire 14-day trip involves a significant amount of travel and walking. We’ve found that the ideal age range for this kind of extended tour is typically 6-12 years old. At this age, children are old enough to understand and appreciate the magic behind the films, but not yet so old that they tire of a planned family itinerary. For younger children, you’ll need to be prepared with more flexibility and downtime.

Best Time to Go (and Avoid the Crowds)

To avoid the peak summer crowds and high prices, consider traveling during the “shoulder seasons” of late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October). The weather is often pleasant, and you’ll find it easier to book accommodations and attractions. Plus, a smaller crowd makes for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for your family.

No matter the season, a bit of rain is always a possibility in the UK. Make sure you’re prepared with the right clothing by reading our guide to UK Rain Gear Essentials for the whole family.

Getting Around

Our itinerary utilizes a smart mix of transportation to make your trip seamless. You’ll rely on London’s extensive Underground (the “Tube”) and bus system, and Edinburgh’s public transit.

While our itinerary is built around a road trip outside of these cities, many families prefer the speed and convenience of the UK’s train network. If you’d rather skip the long drive and enjoy the scenery, check out our guide on London to Edinburgh by train with kids.

For navigating the cobblestone streets and busy Tube stations with ease, we’ve found that the right stroller can make all the difference. You can find all the best cobblestone-approved travel strollers in our guide to The Best Travel Strollers for Europe.

For the rest of the journey, you’ll need a rental car. We recommend booking an automatic car well in advance and being prepared to drive on the left-hand side of the road. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with our US Family’s Guide to Driving in the UK (on the Left!).

When you’re driving between destinations, you’ll be glad you have a few tricks up your sleeve. For a smooth journey, check out our list of Must-Have Tech for Road Trips with Kids. If you’re traveling with Potterheads in training, use our Toddler Road Trip Survival Guide.

Before You Go: Essential Tips & Considerations

Planning a big family trip to another country can feel daunting, but a little preparation goes a long way. Before you even pack your bags, here are some key tips to make sure your journey is as smooth as possible.

Money-Saving Tips

A two-week trip can add up quickly, so finding ways to save is a lifesaver for any family. However, the UK offers many opportunities to do so. For instance, many of the UK’s major museums and galleries, such as the British Museum and the National Gallery in London, have free general admission, which is a fantastic way to fill an afternoon without spending a dime.

When you’re in the cities, using public transport is often the most cost-effective way to get around. Consider buying an Oyster card or using a contactless credit card for London’s Tube system, as it automatically caps your daily fare.

Lastly, booking train tickets and key attractions, like the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, well in advance can also save you a significant amount of money.

Staying Safe

The UK is a very safe country for tourists, but it’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded cities.

Be mindful of your belongings in busy areas like the London Underground or at popular tourist sites to prevent petty crime like pickpocketing.

Additionally, always use official taxis or reputable ride-share apps. Rest assured that the UK’s police are helpful and approachable should you need assistance.

Tips for Traveling with Kids

eyeglasses on paper

Traveling with children requires a unique approach. Therefore, a little foresight can turn potential meltdowns into magical memories.

For instance, in London, kids under 11 travel for free on the Tube and buses with a fare-paying adult. This is a huge money saver!

Additionally, many Tube stations have wide gates perfect for navigating with strollers.

Always pack plenty of snacks and a reusable water bottle for everyone, as frequent breaks and staying hydrated are key to keeping little ones happy.

In addition to the Harry Potter sights, be sure to sprinkle in some simple, non-Potter-related activities to break up the itinerary. A visit to a local park like St. James’s Park to see the pelicans or finding a unique playground can provide that much-needed downtime and a change of pace.

Packing Tips

To help you prepare for your trip, we’ve created the ultimate guide to planning and packing. Start by checking out our Packing for a UK Family Holiday: The Ultimate Checklist.

No matter the season, a bit of rain is always a possibility in the UK. Make sure you’re prepared with the right clothing by reading our guide to UK Rain Gear Essentials.
