For those of us stateside, figuring out what to bring for the often unpredictable British weather and ensuring the whole family is prepared can feel a little daunting. This family UK packing list is designed specifically for US families heading to the UK, ensuring you pack smart, light (as possible!), and have everything you need for a fantastic trip.
Without further adieu, here’s your family UK packing list:
Packing List for Family Trip to the UK
Here’s a breakdown of what to pack for your family adventure:
1. Essential documents & finances
- Passports: double-check expiration dates! They should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
- Visas (if required): US citizens generally don’t need a visa for short tourist stays in the UK, but it’s always wise to confirm the latest regulations.
- Flight/train tickets & accommodations: book your flights, trains and hotels well in advance, especially during peak travel times. Have printed confirmations or digital copies easily accessible.
- Travel insurance: accidents happen, and medical care abroad can be expensive. Protect your family with comprehensive travel insurance. I always use Arch RoamRight for my family vacations.
- eSIM for data: an eSIM is a digital SIM card that allows you to easily access local data plans without swapping out a physical SIM. It’s a convenient, sustainable way to stay connected, navigate with GPS, and share your adventures without incurring expensive roaming fees.
- Credit/debit cards & some local currency: inform your bank of your travel dates to avoid any holds on your cards. Having some British Pounds (£) on hand for smaller purchases is also a good idea. I recommend getting cash at an ATM abroad for the best exchange rate, and to avoid conversion fees.
💡 Pro tip: many banks will reimburse international ATM fees!
2. Clothing

The UK weather is known for its variability. You might experience sunshine, rain, and a cool breeze all in the same day. Packing in layers is the smartest approach.
To pack minimally, I suggest packing enough for 5-7 days of travel. Make sure your hotel has laundry facilities for longer stays.
- Tops: pack a mix of short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts.
- Sweaters/fleeces: essential for layering and cooler evenings.
- Comfortable pants/jeans: versatile options for sightseeing.
- Waterproof and windproof outerwear: this is non-negotiable! Be prepared for unexpected showers. For a more in-depth guide including a rain gear packing list, check out our article on the best rain gear for travel.
- Underwear and socks: pack enough for each day. Consider moisture-wicking socks for comfortable walking.
- Sleepwear: pajamas and comfortable loungewear.
3. Footwear
You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, exploring historical sites and bustling cities.
- Comfortable walking shoes: broken-in sneakers or walking shoes are a must. If you bought new shoes for the trip, make sure you wear them around at home before relying on them while sightseeing.
- Waterproof shoes/boots: especially important if you plan on exploring the countryside or anticipate rainy days.
- Sandals (optional): for warmer days or relaxing at your accommodation.
4. Toiletries & personal items

- Reusable toiletries: to save space and reduce waste, consider solid toiletries like shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and soap with travel containers. These are a fantastic, leak-proof option. You can also use refillable travel bottles for your favorite liquid products. I also love a good toiletry bag to keep everything organized.
- Medications: pack any prescription medications in their original containers, along with a copy of your prescription. Bring a basic first-aid kit with pain relievers, bandages, and antiseptic wipes.
- Sunscreen & lip balm with SPF: even on cloudy days, the sun can be surprisingly strong.
- Insect repellent: especially if you plan on spending time in parks or the countryside (the midges in Scotland are incessant), bug spray is a must.
- Hand sanitizer: convenient for on-the-go hygiene.
5. Electronics & gadgets
- Smartphones & chargers: don’t forget your charging cables!
- Travel cord organizer: keep all your chargers, cables, and power banks neatly contained and tangle-free in a travel case. This is a simple but incredibly effective way to save time and frustration.
- UK power adapter: the UK uses Type G plugs, which are different from the US. You’ll need at least one adapter to charge your devices. Learn more in our comprehensive guide about UK travel plugs.
- Portable power bank: battery packs are great for keeping your devices charged while you’re out and about.
- Camera & extra memory cards (optional): capture all those family memories!
- Headphones: for entertainment on flights and train journeys. I love these toddler headphones for listening to music, or even podcasts.
6. For the kids

Traveling with children requires a few extra considerations. What to pack for a family trip to the UK also includes items to keep the little ones happy and comfortable:
- Comfort items: their favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or small toy can provide comfort in new surroundings.
- Entertainment: pack books, travel games, or download movies and shows onto tablets for downtime. For specific ideas on entertaining little ones on the plane, check out our article on toddler in-flight essentials.
- Travel stoller: for little kids, a cobblestone-approved travel stroller can be a life saver!
- Snacks & drinks: especially for travel days and outings. Be mindful of customs regulations regarding food.
- Reusable water bottles: stay hydrated while reducing plastic waste.
- Small backpacks: allowing children to carry their own snacks, water, and entertainment in their own backpack will help them feel like they have some control and makes the trip more exciting!
7. Luggage & organization

- Suitcases: choose luggage that is appropriately sized for your trip and easy to manage as a family. Consider durable suitcases that can withstand travel (I’ve been using these suitcases since 2017!).
- To pack the most efficiently, see if everyone in the family can fit all their luggage into a single checked bag.
- Travel backpacks: make sure everyone has their own backpack. Little kids will love having their own backpack to be responsible for! Parents will love having a well organized travel backpack with lots of pockets.
- Travel purse: having a crossbody sling for small items you need throughout the day will be so handy. Plus, you can wear these in front to avoid pick-pockets.
- Packing cubes: packing cubes are an absolute game-changer for organization and maximizing space within your luggage.
- Luggage trackers: always know where you luggage is with Apple AirTags, or the universal Tile.
- Toiletry bags: keeping toiletries organized in a toiletry bag is a must. You might also like organizing in separate TSA-approved liquid bags.
- Reusable shopping bags: handy for groceries, souvenirs, and unexpected purchases. These can be fun to buy in your destination as a useful souvenir.
