Activities

I use Viator when looking for activities, tours, or just things to do wherever I go. Use this website to check out your options, in any destination!

Baby and Toddler Gear Rentals

Sometimes it’s easier to pack light and rent a crib, stroller and/or carseat when you arrive at your destination. I use BabyQuip whenever we rent baby gear.

Data Packages (eSIMs)

Stay connected while abroad and get an international eSIM for your smartphone. This will also allow you to use your maps so you can find your way around. I always use Airalo when traveling, and they have packages for over 200 countries/destinations!

Driver’s Permit

Will you be renting a car while abroad? Use this website to check if your US driver’s license is accepted in your destination. You can also apply for an International Driver’s Permit on this site.

NOTE: There are many fake websites offering international driver’s permits with the intention of gathering your personal data. Make sure the site you’re ordering from is legit.

Insurance

I highly recommend travel insurance for every trip, and personally purchase a policy no matter where I go. I encourage purchasing a blanket policy that covers the entire trip, rather than individual policies with the airline, hotel, tour operator… This way you only need to contact one company if you need to file a claim.

For every trip booked with Hooked on Hiatus, you will receive a quote from Arch RoamRight, my preferred insurance company. You can also purchase yourself on Arch RoamRight’s website

Mail Holding

Have you ever come home to an overstuffed mailbox? Save yourself (and your mailman) the headache and have your mail held while you’re on vacation! The US Post Office will deliver all your held mail on your specified date, or you can pick it all up at the Post Office yourself.

Luggage Storage

I’m a huge fan of taking long layovers to get out an explore an extra city during my vacation, which means I need to put my carry-on somewhere so it doesn’t weigh me down. Check out Radical Storage for storing your luggage all over the world, with the most offerings in Europe.

Mobile Apps

Download a few apps before your trip to help alleviate stress abroad.

  • Itinerary apps help keep your days straight (try TripIt or Google Trips)
  • Airline apps notify you of cancellations, delays and gate changes in real time
  • Google Translate is incredibly helpful when your destination speaks another language
    • Protip: if your destination uses a different script than English does (like Chinese  or Arabic characters), download that language before you go. This way you can use your camera to point at the writing to translate!

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

STEP is a free service that sends you emails with updates from the local U.S. embassy or consulate. If there’s an emergency where you are, it helps the US Department of state contact you with instructions on what to do. Sign up for STEP here.

Passports

Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity from your return date. Do you need to renew your passport? Check out CIBT Passports for renewal options.

  • Psst! Ask me about saving up to 30% on CIBT’s retail service fees!

Trains and More

I’ve booked all my trains in China through Trip.com. They also have train tickets for other destinations in Asia and Europe.

Visas

Does your destination require a visa? Check out CIBT Visas to confirm visa requirements and to apply for your visa.
