Practicalities First: Is Transylvania Safe for Travel?

Is Transylvania safe for travel? Absolutely!

Driving Safety and Hazards

We highly recommend driving during the day. This is best for seeing the beautiful scenery anyways!

In the countryside, you will want to watch for a few things. You may encounter horse carriages, stray dogs and sheep crossing the road. You might also find the occasional pothole.

Medical Comfort and Timing

Of course, you’ll also want to verify with your doctor that you can travel abroad during your pregnancy. The golden second trimester is the sweet spot for travel! You’ll likely be past your nausea, and you’ll still be able to take full, deep breaths.

Just make sure you wear compression socks and walk around on the flight. This goes for long driving days as well!

Language and Currency

The bigger destinations in this babymoon itinerary in Transylvania will all have widely spoken English. Regardless, learning a few key phrases will show your respect that the locals will really appreciate. Some suggsetions:

  • Check, please
  • Thank you
  • Hello / good-bye

You will also want to bring lei with you. Bigger restaurants and grocery stores will accept credit cards. However, most attractions, food stalls and smaller retailers will only accept cash.

Transylvania Babymoon Road Trip Tips: Comfort and Stops

A road trip requires a little extra planning when you’re pregnant. We designed this Transylvania babymoon itinerary with plenty of stops built in. Just follow these simple tips for maximum comfort and relaxation on the road!

The Best Way to Get Around Transylvania

A rental car is essential for this Transylvanian babymoon itinerary to allow for maximum flexibility.

Make sure you book early to secure an automatic transmission! We got a manual, so my husband drove the entire trip.

We actually requested a car that’s only available in Europe for fun, but were “upgraded” to a Ford Focus. Ha! Regardless, it got us everywhere we needed to go.

Get Out and Stretch Often!

On long driving days, make sure you stop often to get those legs moving – every 2 hours or so. Make sure you plan extra time for all these breaks.

This is also a great time to wear your compression socks. They really help with circulation!

Your 10-Day Transylvania Babymoon Itinerary

Day 1: Cluj-Napoca Arrival & Relaxed Exploration

Day 1 is an easy start to your Transylvania babymoon itinerary. Plus, Cluj-Napoca is such a beautiful town to wander around.

When you arrive, pick up your rental car, settle into your hotel and check out the city center, Piața Unirii. Make sure you find papanasi in a local cafe!

Wander around the Old Town, checking out the Church of Saint Michael and the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral. Climb up to Cetățuia Park for lovely views of the Old Town.

Taking an easy pace while exploring this gorgeous town is an excellent way to start your babymoon.

Day 2: Turda Salt Mine Half Day Trip

Take a trip south to the Salina Turda, a huge underground salt mine. It’s so big there’s even a ferris wheel inside!

You can actually rent paddle boats to float around on this lake pictured, even though my photo doesn’t show just how big this place is.

There are about a million stairs (give or take) to get down to the salt mine. However, you do have the option to take the elevator. Decide what’s best for your body!

We arrived right at 9 am, and there were some other visitors. However, when we left around 11 am, there was a bus-load of school kids just arriving, so I recommend arriving early!

In the afternoon, you can continue to wander the winding cobblestone streets of Cluj-Napoca, or even check out the Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden.

Day 3: Sighișoara: A Medieval Fairytale

Sighișoara is an absolutely adorable town with a dark history – sort of. This is the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, who inspired Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. You can even visit the house he was born in!

Because of this Dracula connection, this is the first “touristy” stop on your itinerary. Get an early start to beat the tour bus crowds!

I highly recommend climbing up the Clock Tower for views of the city. Although, the climb down was intimidating and we took it very slow.

If narrow winding stairways are not your thing, climb up the Covered Stairway from the Old Town. You’ll arrive at a cemetery with a small chapel that you can explore, but you’ll get a great view of the city. This quiet area is a great place to avoid any crowds in the lower town.

If you cross the river, you can also check out the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church.

Learn more about this stop in our Sighișoara Babymoon Guide.

Day 4: Drive Day to Balvanyos

Make your way to the Balvanyos Resort. Your entire stay here is completely focused on relaxing and taking it easy – starting with the drive in.

Slow down. Take in the scenic beauty of the Transylvanian hills on the way to the resort. Even better? Set your phone to airplane mode and disconnect for your 2-day stay. It’s a rejuvenating mental break.

This resort was specifically chosen for its remoteness in the mountains and incredible service. During the winter, this is a popular ski resort, but outside of high season you will find a tranquil oasis.

If you’d like to get outside into nature, there is a great little hiking area that has healing sulfur springs. They’re not heated, so we couldn’t soak in April, but that also meant we were the only ones there. Just a heads up, we did see bear prints, but much to my husband’s dismay, no bears.

Additionally, the restaurant onsite was fantastic! They offer enough variety you won’t mind eating there for your full stay.

Day 5: Balvanyos Resort: Relaxation Retreat

I highly recommend checking out the spa. We signed up for a couple’s massage, although since I was 15 weeks pregnant I got a facial instead, which was wonderful.

My husband still got the massage – his first ever – and giggled the entire time. So did his masseuse, which of course made me giggle, so my facial was definitely tricky.

There are also several pools onsite. Although many of them are hot tubs and there’s a couple sauna/steam rooms, I did enjoy sticking my feet in some of the hot tubs. You can even sit in a salt room.

There’s also a walk-through shower with different zones that was a lot of fun. We went through it several times.

Day 6: Brașov

Make the trek out of the hills and arrive in Brașov. Surrounded by mountains, this is an adorable town that admittedly, I wish we’d had more time in.

Make sure you explore the Black Church and its stunning 15th Century gothic architecture. You can also take the cable car up Mount Tâmpa, pending weather.

Otherwise, the Old Town is very walkable, filled with cafes and small eateries. Take it easy and take your time soaking it all in!

Day 7: Bran Castle Trip

Bran Castle is by far the most touristy attraction on your itinerary, so try to arrive right at opening, or 3-4 hours before closing.

We chose to explore the extra torture museum within the castle (10 lei each in 2023), which added about an hour. This was a nice respite from all the castle visitors, as many fewer people chose this add on.

Additionally, if you’re looking for souvenirs, the market area outside of the castle is sure to have whatever you need, and lots of what you don’t. Obviously you’ll find lots of Dracula memorabilia, but you’ll also see traditional wooden crafts, beautiful embroidery and other textiles.

For everything you need to know about Dracula’s Castle while pregnant, read our Bran Castle Accessibility Pregnant Guide.

Day 8: Sinaia & Peleș Castle

Peleș Castle cannot be missed! The woodwork interior is absolutely stunning. This is a very romantic castle, and the castle grounds provide a beautiful backdrop for photos.

The first floor will have the most tourists, as this is included in the regular ticket.

However, I highly recommend booking the tickets that include floors 2 & 3. This way you’ll get to see the royal apartments (fully furnished!), plus you’ll get to go where the tour bus crowds don’t.

P.S. If you’re familiar with the video game Resident Evil Village, this castle is the inspiration for Castle Dimistrescu.

Day 9: Sibiu: The City of Eyes

Sibiu is known as the City of Eyes for the attic vents that are popular on the old buildings in town. This is a great town to just wander around leisurely.

The Council Tower (Turnul Sfatului) is considered to be one of the most iconic buildings in the city. You can climb up this tower for great views of the Old Town! Bring cash, as they don’t accept cards.

If you’d like to get just outside of the city, check out the ASTRA National Museum Complex, an open-air folk museum. This is a great stop to avoid crowds!

Day 10: Hunedoara and Timișoara & Departure

Start your day early to head west towards Timișoara. Hunedoara is a small town along the way, home to the impressive Corvin’s Castle.

Corvin’s Castle, or Hunedoara Castle, or Castelul Corvinilor, is exactly what I imagine when I think of a medieval castle. It’s got the moat, the long bridge, the turrets… everything!

You will only need about 2 hours for this castle visit, which is a great amount of time to break up the drive from Sibiu to Timișoara.

The main draw of Timișoara is the beautiful, quiet old town. This small city is far from the tourist path, so you’ll get to enjoy a relaxing final day strolling the quiet cobblestone streets. Stop in a local cafe to have your final schnitzel and soup.

When is the best time to visit Transylvania to avoid crowds?

Like most destinations, the best time to visit Transylvania to avoid the crowds is shoulder season (May or September). We visited in late March/early April. Honestly, we felt we had a lot of attractions to ourselves.

Transylvania, and Romania in general, are not on the regular tourist route. If your Romanian babymoon coincides with summer (or winter in the mountains), you still will not feel like you’re being crowded by other tourists.

Avoiding Castle Crowds

Peleș Castle is an absolute must-see for its stunning woodwork and history. Meanwhile, Bran Castle is an iconic stop that is highly recommended.

Especially in summer, arrive at both of these castles right at opening. Alternatively, you can arrive a few hours before closing. This will help avoid touring with tour buses!
