The sound of crashing waves, the scrunch of warm sand between your toes and the sheer joy on your little traveler’s face as they discover a whole new world of fun. But before you dive headfirst into paradise, let’s talk about your toddler beach packing list. Because, let’s be honest, beach trips with toddlers require a bit more planning than your solo sunbathing days.

I’ve got you covered with the ultimate toddler beach packing list, ensuring your little beach bum has a safe and happy time.

This list was written assuming you’ve flown to your destination (hello, Caribbean winter escape!), so you won’t find things like a beach wagon or a cooler on wheels here. I haven’t exactly been a minimalist traveler since my toddler, but I’m certainly not taking up precious space in my suitcase for a whole wagon!

The Essentials

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+): toddler skin is delicate. Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen and reapply frequently, especially after swimming. This sunscreen is my favorite.
  • Swim diapers/swimsuit: pack a few extras, because accidents happen! We have used these reusable swim diapers since our toddler took swimming lessons at 6 months – they’re great!
  • Sun hat: a wide-brimmed hat with a strap is crucial for protecting their face and neck from the sun.
  • Sunglasses: a good idea to protect their eyes.
  • UV protective swimsuit/rash guard: for extra protection against those strong rays.
    • Avoid blue or green rash guards, as these colors blend in with the water. Bright colors mean you can easily spot your wandering toddler!
  • Beach towels: bring at least two: one for drying and one for sitting on. Some hotels will offer beach towels, but some will fine you, so make sure you check first.
  • Water shoes: protect those tiny feet from hot sand and sharp shells. Crocs are also great!
  • First-aid kit: bandages, antiseptic wipes and pain reliever are always good to have on hand.
  • Life jacket: if only for peace of mind.
  • Change of clothes: sand gets everywhere, and wet clothes can be uncomfortable.
  • Beach bag: bring a good beach bag that holds everything but the sand. We use our beach bag for going to the pool too, which works wonderfully.

Entertainment & comfort items

  • Beach toys: shovels, molds or anything else that encourages sand play. A collapsible colander makes a great beach toy that easily fits in a suitcase!
  • Snacks & drinks: pack plenty of healthy snacks and water to keep everyone hydrated and energized. Cut fruit, crackers and pouches are great options. Keep your puree pouches in your hotel fridge so they’re extra refreshing.
  • Water bottle: I love this spill proof water bottle.
  • Packable cooler bag: keep those snacks and drinks cold and fresh.
  • Portable shade: a beach umbrella or pop-up tent can provide much-needed shade for beaches without trees. Pro tip: avoid tents with a bottom, as they just collect sand. It’s much easier to just shake off a towel.
  • Baby powder: a sprinkle of baby powder helps remove sand from sticky skin. Just make sure you use it far away from the ocean, once you’re off the sand.
  • Wet bags: for storing wet clothes, diapers, trash and sandy toys.
  • Books/small toys: for downtime and quiet moments. These bath time books are perfect for the beach.
  • Baby carrier: your toddler may be able to walk to the beach, but might not leave awake. Bring a baby carrier so you can still carry everything else.
  • Soothing aloe: even if no one got a burn, aloe still feels nice on warm skin after several hours in the sun.

“Just in Case” Items

  • Extra diapers: can you ever have too many?
  • Wipes: for cleaning up messes and sandy hands.
  • Pacifier/comfort item: if your toddler relies on one, don’t forget it!
  • Medications: If your child needs any specific medication, bring it along.
  • Hand sanitizer: for quick clean ups before snack time.

Tips for a Smooth Beach Day

  • Plan for nap time: try to schedule your beach trip around your toddler’s nap schedule. Going beforehand will mean you beat peak sun hours, plus they’ll probably nap harder, so you can actually catch up on some reading, like you used to do on vacation.
  • Arrive early: beat the crowds and the hottest part of the day.
  • Find a shady spot: set up your base under trees or an umbrella or tent.
  • Take breaks: don’t try to stay at the beach for too long. You can probably stay for a couple hours, but lazing on the beach all day long is a thing of the past.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: offer water frequently, even if they don’t seem thirsty.
  • Embrace the mess: sand will get everywhere, and that’s okay! You’ll get it off eventually.
  • Have fun! Remember to relax and enjoy the precious moments with your little traveler.
