The PKP Family Ticket & Discounts

Do children travel free on Polish trains (PKP)?

Yes! Well, some do.

Children 4 and under ride for free in Class 2 carriages. However, they do still require a no-cost ticket. Additionally, be prepared to prove their age with a passport!

How to Use the PKP Family Ticket Discount

With the Family Ticket Discount, up to 5 people traveling together receive a 30% discount on all PKP journeys, so long as there is at least 1 child under 16 in the party.

To obtain the PKP Family Ticket Discount online, you must book directly on the intercity.pl website – no third party websites. However, you can also get this discount by purchasing tickets at the train station, or from the conductor on the train.

Especially when traveling in summer, you will want to book your tickets in advance. I highly recommend booking directly on their website to ensure availability!

Note that there are no ticket discounts in Class 1 carriages.

PKP Save Together Discount (Taniej z Bliskimi)

For families with up to 6 people, or any other groups traveling together, you can also use the Save Together Discount.

This discount also offers 30% off for each traveler, and does not require any children on the reservation!

Taniej z Bliskimi tickets must be purchased at least 7 days in advance on the intercity.pl website.

How to Book PKP Family Compartment

You can find the Family Compartment carriage online by looking for the adult with a child symbol.

These seats are 2 by 2, facing each other. They also have a little extra space in the carriage so your toddler can roam.

Bonus: you qualify to book these seats if you’re pregnant, even without children aboard!

If the Family Compartments aren’t available, try to get seats in another carriage with a table between them. These are also 2 by 2, facing each other.

Are there changing tables on Polish trains? Yes, they’re located in the Family Compartment carriage.

What seats should you avoid with a toddler on a PKP train?

There is a dedicated Quiet Zone – typically carriage 7 on any train.

People are discouraged from talking loudly, listening to music without headphones, and generally being disruptive in the Quiet Zone carriage.

Not exactly a toddler-friendly environment.

Traveling with Gear on Polish Trains

Malbork Central Train Station

Can I bring a stroller on a PKP train? Yes, you sure can! For free!

Make sure you’ve got a compact, foldable stroller that can fit in the luggage rack or in the vestibule at the end of your carriage.

Luggage space is limited on these trains, so pack smart and as minimally as you can. Bring a smaller backpack to keep at your seat with all the snacks and entertainment you’ll need for your journey.

Do I need a car seat? No, they’re not necessary for train travel. That’s the best part of train travel. Consequently, this makes it easier to pack minimally!

Entertainment and Food on the PKP

Entertainment

While Wi-Fi is available on many routes, it is not guaranteed. We’re a mostly screen-free home, so we’ve always got plenty of quiet entertainment packed (although I’ve always got my Kindle Paperwhite along).

Additionally, we have a separate set of toys that only come out while traveling, so our toddler stays entertained longer. Here are a few of our favorite items:

Food

What is the “Wars” children’s menu like on Polish trains? You will find lots of kid-friendly items on the kids’ menu!

From pierogi to potato pancakes (placki ziemniaczane) and even soups, you’re likely going to find something your toddler will eat.

Plus, the Wars staff can heat a bottle or meal for your baby or toddler when requested!

You will also receive a complimentary drink and small snack for each passenger in your party!

However, if you’ve got a really picky eater, make sure you pack some familiar snacks from home. A few suggestions:

Conclusion

Using the PKP is a no brainer when traveling in Poland. Plus, the Family Ticket Discount makes it more accessible for families. And the Family Compartment is a game changer!
